Album

The Nexus is the second album by the SwedishDanish metalcore band Amaranthe. The album was released on varying dates in March 2013, starting on the 13th in Japan and concluding on the 26th in the US. The Nexus is a development of the sound and ideas Amaranthe introduced on their first record. The band stated that they felt the contrasts are greater, the mix and blends of genres is more controversial, and more creative freedoms were taken in this album. The Nexus. Theory Of Everything. I don't really believe in "guilty pleasures" when it comes to music, but if anything qualifies in that category, for me it has to be Swedish band Amaranthe. When it comes to metal with female vocals, I prefer Doro and Benedictum to Delain or Epica. I had written off Amaranthe as the ABBA of pop metal, but after catching their live show (at last year's ProgPower USA festival), I came out a believer. Yes, they're poppy, but the musicianship is extremely tight, having three distinct vocalists adds an extra dimension to their sound, and they're just too darned catchy and fun to resist.

The Nexus is Amaranthe's second album, and to be honest, it sounds just like their debut. I suppose if you're looking for growth and progression, that may be a negative, but I'm going with "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" here. Besides, if I want progression I'll buy an Opeth album. You get a dozen new songs here, all between 3-4 minutes long, and they're all ridiculously catchy and melodic. I love the way the surprisingly heavy rhythms (straight from the melodic death metal playbook) play off the almost dance-pop synths (see, for example: "Electroheart"), and of course the balance between harsh, hardcore male vocals, clean male vocals and poppy female vocals. Elize Ryd could teach today's pop starlets a thing or two, and her charisma (and yes, the fact that she's so easy on the eyes) is a big part of Amaranthe's appeal.

The whole album is very strong, but there are a few standout tracks on The Nexus, namely "Mechanical Illusion," "Burn With Me," "Infinity" and above all the title track, which is the album's first single and video (and holy high production values, what a video!) and is guaranteed to get lodged in your head for days, if not weeks.

If you liked the Amaranthe debut, you're going to love The Nexus. If you're unfamiliar with the band, but enjoy bands like Delain, Within Temptation and Epica, this album ought to make you an Amaranthe fan. With any luck, this will be the album that really puts the band on the map here in the US. Hopefully they'll get back to the US for a proper tour to support the album.

Edition Notes: There are a few different versions of The Nexus available. The digipack version features an acoustic version of "Afterlife" as a bonus track, while the Japanese once again get the best version, with two acoustic bonus tracks ("Burn With Me" and "Hunger") and a bonus DVD. The acoustic tracks are interesting enough, but probably aren't enough to justify the import price tag unless you're an Amaranthe superfan. A later “Limited Edition” pressing included the acoustic “Afterlife” and an early version of “Leave Everything Behind.” Again, not a game changer. Get whichever version is easiest on the wallet.
