Dont Look Back is a 1967 American documentary film by D. Pennebaker that covers Bob Dylan's 1965 concert tour in England. In 1998, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. In a 2014 Sight & Sound poll, film critics voted Dont Look Back the joint ninth best documentary film of all time. Pennebaker's black-and-white 1967. When it first appeared in 1967, Don't Look Back was an eye-opening look at the tumultuous life of Bob Dylan circa 1965. It only grew in stature in later years, ranking as a classic examination of the world of popular music as it was lived in the 60s. Track Listing. Shot during Dylan's 1965 British concert tour, Don't Look Back employs an edgy vérité style that was, and is, a snug fit with the artist's own consciously rough-hewn persona. Pennebakers documentary, Dont Look Back, captures Bob Dylan during his 1965 tour of England. Bringing It All Back Home had peaked at number 1 in the UK. Teenage girls stalk his hotel, fans chase his limousine, and newspapers feed the frenzy with endless Bob Dylan articles. Pop singer Donovan was also enjoying a surge of popularity in 1965. Throughout the film, Dylan is preoccupied with the local press. The resulting film, Dont Look Back intentionally absent the apostrophe, now sits preserved by the Library of Congress and remains groundbreaking in several respects in addition to its insights regarding Dylan. The documentary, which captures several performances of songs in full or part, serves as an early example of the concert film. If the English fans Dylan encounters in Dont Look Back could only see Pennebakers dailies, no doubt their perception would be altered. Instead of an anarchist, theyd see a warm, goofball type gaining a grasp on his fame while upending society through the menacing act of quietly killing time between concerts and various commitments. Trailer - Theatrical Trailer. Dylan said this baffling-yet-haunting country-rock epic was inspired by a man he saw on a train ride from Mexico to San Diego: He must have been 150 years old Both his eyes were burning, and there was smoke coming out of his nostrils. Sounds rough. I don't want to live that way anymore, Dylan told Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner in 1969. Cameron Crowe: One of the great gifts Bob Dylan has is to slip a grace note into an album, something that doesn't cry out to be noticed but is unforgettable. To me, that's Buckets of Rain, the perfect grace note for Blood on the Tracks: melancholy, loping and bittersweet. It's sly and unpretentious, but has huge power. Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singersongwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. By 1997, fans were wondering whether Bob Dylan had anything left in his artistic tank, but a near-fatal illness had clearly inspired him, resulting in a dark, moody album filled with resignation and visions of mortality.
