Fried was released on 9 November 1984, just six months after Cope's first solo album World Shut Your Mouth. Cope retained the guitarist Steve Lovell and the guest oboe player Kate St. John from the previous album, but added his Drayton Bassett musical foil Donald Ross Skinner on rhythm and slide guitars, the former Waterboys drummer Chris Whitten and, on one track, the former Mighty Wah guitarist, Steve Brother Johnno Johnson. The album, with its psychedelic sound, demented lyrics and cover photo of Cope nude in a giant tortoise shell crawling around on a slag heap, caused many in the music community to label him another acid casualty in the vein of Syd Barrett a view compounded by an incident when he cut his stomach open onstage before this albums release. The album sold quite poorly and caused Copes label, Polygram, to drop him. Fried Q&A. Writers Julian Cope. More Julian Cope albums. Pop Name Julian Cope. Album Name Fried. Type Album. One of the great eccentric new wave, indie heroes of the 1980s, Julian Cope started out in the punk band Crucial Three with Ian McCulloch and Pete Wylie before making his name as the flamboyant front man of The Teardrop Explodes. Mixing psychedelia, surrealism and glam rock into smart alternative pop, Cope was billed as the era's Syd Barrett or Roky Erikson and he had a taste for excess and touch of strangeness to back it up.
