Collage is an album by the Italian progressive rock band Le Orme. It was released in 1971. It is the first progressive-like album by the band, who had previously recorded only the beat-oriented Ad Gloriam of 1968. The album begins with the instrumental Collage, then continues with the sad song Era inverno It Was Winter, a conversation between a man and a harlot. The third song, Cemento armato Reinforced Concrete, is introduced by piano and describes the situation in the cities. Le Orme. Collage 1971 is the real first Le Orme LP, after two previous albums of beat music. It is also the first album to feature the trio's progressive rock sound, albeit in an embryonic stage. As such, it is a mixed bag. On the one hand you get pompous, excessive keyboard workouts that owe a lot to the Nice Collage, Sguardo Verso Il Cielo, down to orchestral arrangements. Ma allora basterebbe cambiare la Inner per avere la prima stampa?? In realtà è diversa la label...una con lo scalino l'altra senza.
“Collage”, apart from the album “L’aurora delle Orme”, a compilation released by Car Juke-Box record label to take advantage of the growing success of the Venetian band, is the second LP by Le Orme, and follows their 1968 beat/psychedelic “Ad Gloriam”.

These elements almost completely disappeared in “Collage”, which was rather strongly affected by progressive rock contaminations from Great Britain, the territory in which the genre was spreading like wildfire already in 1971. Because of the military service, the young authors of “Ad Gloriam” became a trio: Tony Pagliuca (keyboards), Michi Dei Rossi (drums) and Aldo Tagliapietra (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar); the first of the three especially took a trip to England to explore the new rock sound of the time, and when he returned home the Italian pop music panorama changed forever.

“Collage” is today a classic, both in its iconic cover photo and its music: never before had anyone in the Italian peninsula heard anything like that, if not of foreign origin. A cornerstone of what was then still called ‘Italian pop’, fundamental not only within the prog scene!
Collage is Le Orme's first try at progressive rock, after one album of psychedelic pop (Ad Gloriam), and a bunch of singles released as far back as 1967 (many which appeared on L'Aurora Della Orme). By this point, the band was trimmed down to Aldo Tagliapietra, Tony Pagliuca, and Michi Dei Rossi. Now I have to say the picture of Aldo Tagliapietra on the back cover on the far bottom right looks utterly ridiculous. The photo makes him out like he's a screamer on the lines of Ian Gillan or Rob Halford. Not even close. If you're familiar with his singing, his voice is the same as you expect him on other albums. Many people really don't look too fondly on this album. They go for a more raw approach, and Tony Pagliuca often goes for that same fuzzed Hammond organ sound Jon Lord goes for. But the music is nothing like Deep Purple, aside from the organ playing. The title track has what sounds to me like classical themes. There's even a short part played on clavinet, in the classical style (it needs to be noted that Hohner meant the clavinet for the classical market, little did Hohner know the keyboard was most often used in funk, like Steve Wonder's "Superstition" or Herbie Hancock's more funky stuff). Many of the songs are of a more proto-prog direction, than full-on prog, like "Era Inverno" and "Sguardo Verso il Cielo". "Cemento Armato" is most noted for that extended organ solo, in that Jon Lord manner. They really trip me out with "Evasione Totale", with some great spacy organ, and trippy sound effects. "Morte di un Fiore" is more pop-oriented, and probably how Le Orme might have sounded like in 1971 if they didn't progress much further than Ad Gloriam. This was to Italian prog what In the Court of the Crimson King was to prog in general. This album was responsible for launching the Italian prog scene. Certainly people will look towards their following albums, Uomo di Pezza, Felona e Sorona, Contrappunti as better albums, but Collage is not bad, if you don't mind their more raw, often proto-prog approach.
