Even commenting on the cover and title of this record would be taking shooting fish in a barrel to a new level, but suffice to say it's not a promising start. Nor is 'She's Alright', the Stereophonics-by-numbers title for a Stereophonics-by-numbers song that opens this set of twelve. This type of straight-forward three-chord rocker is something that's filled out the band's albums for four records by this point, mostly interchangeable and never memorable. Three songs later, 'Trouble' repeats the formula, with some boogie-woogie piano added for good measure. With the highly polished production present throughout this mid-era of the group's discography, it's difficult to imagine Keep Calm and Carry On being near the top of any rock'n'roll fan's wishlist, and the songs just end up feeling thoroughly redundant.

Thankfully, the remaining ten tracks find Stereophonics finally exploring some new territory. 'I Got Your Number' and 'Stuck in a Rut' bolt on big, sweeping choruses to the rock'n'roll format, lending them a sense of drama and memorability unusual for the group. Elsewhere, the mood is changed dramatically, and the band finally let the sound they've been developing over the past two albums properly come to the front. Since 'Dakota' and 'Rewind' in 2005, Kelly Jones and co. have hinted at a more widescreen sound, more U2 than Status Quo, and for all their meat and potatoes rock image, it's a sound that suits them.

Electronic drums and synth stabs add a hint of motorik to the alternately brooding and soaring 'Beerbottle', Morricone guitar twangs providing texture. Single 'Could You Be the One?' starts much in the same way as one of their early '00s acoustic bores, but builds up to a lushly layered epic. 'Uppercut' and 'Wonder' are melodic guitar pop in the 'Dakota' mould. '100mph', its chorus drenched in strings, is outright beautiful and affecting. It's quite difficult to comprehend these songs being written by the same band who put out a run of plodding, wholly unemotional songs at the start of the century.

It's not perfect by any means - although Kelly Jones employs his broadest melodic range since the '90s, he's still very fond of lapsing into repeating the same couple of notes ad nauseam; his lyrics are more expressive and honest than in the past, but fall into hackneyed nonsense a lot of the time (I've given up counting how many time's he's used a variation of "take me for a ride" at this point); not forgetting the aforementioned pub rock'n'roll band embarrassments - but by combining the energy of 2005's Language. Violence. Sex. Other? and the tenderness of 2007's Pull the Pin, the band have come closest to putting together a broadly consistent and enjoyable album since their debut. It's not something often said of Stereophonics, but they develop their sound from album to album, and have finally hit upon one that makes a genuinely rewarding listen.
