Babylon's Burning is about the fiery collapse of western civilization. The Ruts were heavily involved in anti-racism causes and Southall born lead singer Malcolm Owen was particularly affected by the race riots in his hometown in April 1979. Another song on the album, Jah War, is about those riots. This was featured in the 1980 film Times Square. This double LP also exists as one single CD. It's a pity that no attempt was made to make this release more interesting with any liner notes, band photos or anything like it. Not even details about the contents are given, which is extremely unhelpful. So here goes:

Tracks A1 to B8 are simply a re-issue of the "Live and Loud" album, which has been available on three previous CD releases (one stand alone, one combined with an Adverts gig, and as part if the Criminal Minds 2CD). Tracks A1 to A7 are from the gig at the Marquee in London in July '79. B1 to B3 are from "BBC in Concert" from the same month. B4 to B8 are from a different gig, namely Strathclyde University in Glasgow in November of that year. It should be noted that the sound is very rough and apart from its muddy bootleg charm there is no real reason to want these recordings, since the full gig at the Marquee has been re-released in crystal clear quality on disc 4 of the box set "The Virgin Years" (sounding as if recorded just yesterday). The BBC live tracks have been available for many years, officially, better sounding and more complete.
As for the Strathclyde encores, it would have been far, far more interesting had they laid their hands on the entire Strathclyde recording, instead of just including the same old encores here.
Worse even, because of time constraints they opted to edit out Malcolm's introduction of Auntie Pus, a guest who features on a pretty bad cover of "Blue Suede Shoes", hence misleading the listener into thinking it's Malcolm behind the mic.

C1 to D8 are a re-issue of the 2000 compilation of early demos "In a Rut". The tracks are quite interesting and worth checking out. However, the absence of any informative liner notes is somewhat frustrating, thus "In a Rut" remains the better release of the two.

I'd give this release a 5/10 rating, since half of the contents has become redundant by now and because the digipak package is visually as boring as it can get. In that sense coloured vinyl does make up for what the CD lacks, namely some visual appeal.
The music by the Ruts remains great though. Even a sub-standard live recording can't hide the tremendous energy emanating from the legendary Marquee show.
